Children Removed from Filthy Apartment, Mom Charged

A woman from Lackawanna County is behind bars after police said she left her two young children home alone in filthy conditions.
The second-floor apartment on Mooney Street in Olyphant was raided Tuesday night after someone told police the woman was leaving her children home alone on a regular basis.
The woman is charged with endangering the welfare of her children. Newswatch 16 is not identifying her to protect those children.
A case worker in Lackawanna County said she has never seen filthy conditions like what she saw at the home.
Authorities said not only were children living in filth, but the three and six year olds were home alone while their mother worked the overnight shift.
Humane officers removed four cats, three dogs and two birds from the home Wednesday after the woman who lived there was charged with leaving her two young children alone for hours, with them and the animals living in filth.
"There was a lot of urine and feces on the floor mostly in the children's bedroom, some in the kitchen. One of the dogs was in a crate. A lot of feces and hair of the feces was turning white, which indicates it's been in there for quite a while. No food or water for the dog. The birds' cages were very unsanitary, dirty conditions. They had food and water," said humane officer Jessica Best with the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.
Police discovered the deplorable conditions when they came to check on the children after reports that they were left home alone on three occasions, each while their mother worked the midnight shift at a local factory.
